Favorites of 2016 & Welcome 2017!

While 2016 was rougher than some years, like any time period, it came with ups and downs.  Today, I'm looking back at 2016 and looking ahead at 2017.  Throughout this post, I'm sharing MY favorite looks or blog posts from 2016 in no order of preference!
Wild Card Wednesday:  Who What Wear Slip Dress

One of my favorite aspects of 2016 was traveling.  I love traveling and actually had several opportunities to do so in 2016.  I went to NYC for an exciting blogging opportunity with my favorite fashion brand ELOQUII.  I was soooo honored to be the June Style & Substance feature, and the trip was a fantastic experience in which I met some amazing people, got to wear awesome clothes, and even learned some ideas for make-up and photography!

Wild Card Wednesday:  That Versatile Skirt

The second trip was to Panama City Beach for relaxation and fun with the family and some requisite Vitamin D.  I had a great time and it led to a swimsuit photo shoot that had me feeling all kinds of ways!

My last trip this past year was to Texas to see my grandmother who I would see alive for the last time.  It was a difficult trip, seeing how Alzheimer's had ravaged my grandmother's brain and how much she had deteriorated physically in the short time since she had moved from the St. Louis area to Texas to live near my uncle.  I was so grateful though that I had the chance to see her once more.  Even though she didn't remember me or my kids, the sweetness with which she interacted with the kids showed her true character and is a memory that I hope lasts my lifetime.

Donald Trump was elected president, and I continue to worry if 2017 will really be any better.  My fears aren't political, but because as an individual, I truly believe that Trump is grossly unfit to lead anyone, let alone the United States.  I believe that his general incompetence, apparent mental instability, and personal greed and interests could lead to some very scary outcomes for this country.  As a result, I'm feeling more of my activist spirit coming out, and I plan to fight against the destruction of my country through protest, phone calls, and my pocketbook in 2017.

On the blogging front, things are looking up, and I'm soooo excited about launching my new blog next week.  Starting on Monday, head over to stylecassentials.com (no more blogspot) for a new look and feel.  I would love to hear your feedback on the new site.  I hope that the changes will make the blog easier to navigate and easier to catch up with your favorite types of posts.  To kick off the re-lauch, I also have some exciting giveaways planned, so stay tuned!

Manic Monday: 9 to 5 Color

With winter now in full swing, I find myself reaching for rich berry hues.  For today's Manic Monday post, I styled a pretty burgundy pleated skirt from ASOS.
Skirt:  ASOS (Available here)
This skirt paired with a deep forest blouse is a sophisticated take on the classic Christmas color combination.  I don't think red and green need to be relegated just to the Christmas holiday - this is just a great color combination for winter!
Blouse:  Who What Wear x Target (Available in ivory or black here and here)
Belt:  ELOQUII (Available here)
The shapes work particularly well for the office, and I love how the pleats of the skirt play with the pleats on the blouse.  The belt and booties help tie the look together.

The look has a little bit of a late 70s/early 80s vibe but still feels modern.
Boots:  FarylRobin Fawcett (Available at Target here)
Purse:  Target (old)
Glasses:  Coach
Do you wear green and red together outside of the holidays?

Manic Monday: Suited for the Office Holiday Party

With the holiday season in full swing, I have been thinking about what I would like to wear to my upcoming office holiday party.  My office's party is during the day after spending the morning working in the office.
Pants:  Who What Wear for Target (Available here)
So, whatever I wear for the party has to be office-appropriate.  I look for something that can work for the daytime hours but that is still elevated from my typical workplace attire.

One option I'm considering for this year's party is a suit in a more festive or evening fabric.
Camisole:  Who What Wear for Target (Available here)
Earrings:  The Limited
Blazer:  Eloquii (Available here)
The first look is a velvet suit option that I pulled together with options from Who What Wear for Target and Eloquii.  I paired wide leg velvet pants and a velvet camisole with a velvet blazer.  Even though the pants and blazer are from different shops, the blacks and velvets match perfectly.  Both pieces are super soft, and the elastic-waist pants are like wearing pajamas to work!
Clutch:  The Limited
Blazer:  Eloquii (Available here)
Another option is to pair a classic tuxedo blazer with faux leather pants and a pretty blouse.  The sheer embroidered fabric on the neckline of the blouse feels special while the black glittery heels add a subtle fancy touch.
Pants:  Who What Wear for Target
Blouse:  Torrid
I'm not sure if either of these looks will make the cut for my office party, but they're definitely in the running.
Clutch: Who What Wear for Target (Available here)
Shoes: Payless
Bracelet:  LOFT
Glasses:  Valentino
Glasses:  Coach
Earrings:  Eva Mendes for NY&CO
Do you have a workplace holiday party to attend?  Is it daytime or evening, and what do you plan to wear?

Casual Friday: Monochromatic Dots

Happy Friday everyone!  Hope you all have had a great week!  I'm excited for the weekend in which I hope to catch up on some sleep!!!  I have a few things to do this weekend, but I'm definitely hoping to make this weekend a more low-key time.
Shirt:  Who What Wear x Target (Available here)
If I make it out of the house, it will definitely be in casual looks like this denim outfit.  I am a big fan of Torrid's jeggings in extra short length.
Jeans:  Torrid (Available here)
Boots:  Sonoma life+style from Kohl's
They offer the best fit in denim that I have had in years!!  Plus, they are super comfortable which is a must.  I avoided jeans for a long time because I found them too uncomfortable.  So glad that I found this style because it's perfect...with no alterations!
Clutch:  Who What Wear x Target (Available here)
I paired the jeans with a matching top and scarf from the Who What Wear line for Target.  I am OBSESSED with this whole line and always look forward to the new collections.  This top and scarf are from the early fall collection, but both pieces are still available (and now on clearance) if you're interested!!
Scarf:  Who What Wear x Target (Available here)
Tank:  Old Navy (old)
Glasses:  Valentino
Have you checked out the Who What Wear line for Target?  Torrid jeggings?  Where do you find your jeans?

Wild Card Wednesday: Reveal & Conceal

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another wild card look!

For today's look I styled a lace dress for an evening out.  I wore a very similar version of this look to a recent fashion event, and I felt super chic and confident.  I just love how layering the lace dress over a bodysuit gives the outfit an unexpected edge.

Dress:  Forever 21+ (Available here)
Trench:  Who What Wear xTarget (Available here)
Boots:  FarylRobin Fawcett (Available at Target here)
Since the shapes and color palette of this look were simple, I seized the opportunity to really play around with texture and pattern, mixing the patterned lace with polka dots, jeweled boots, and a metallic striped bag.
Bodysuit:  Boohoo Plus
Glasses:  Valentino
Purse:  Who What Wear x Target (Available here)
For a more conservative version of this look that would be suitable for work, dinner, or any number of occasions, simply add a black bodycon dress or slip under the lace dress.
How would you style this dress?

Casual Friday: The Oversized Sweatshirt

Hope those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving had a lovely time.  This holiday season is a little different for my family.  Last month, my grandmother ended her long suffering with Alzheimer's.  Just this week, my husband lost his father.  It has been a rough time for my family, but it has also been comforting to know that two very ill people are no longer enduring pain.
Dress:  ASOS (Available here)
Bracelet:  Ann Taylor
I feel so blessed that my children were able to know my grandmother.  She was such a special woman, and she just loved kids.  My youngest daughter was especially close to my father-in-law, and while his death has been hard on her, I  am thankful that she and my other kids had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with him.
Necklace:  LOFT
Yesterday, we had two Thanksgiving meals to try to spend the holiday with more family.  Two meals meant I needed some eatin' pants and later, no pants at all!  Ha, ha!
Sneakers:  Nike (old)
For the first part of the day, I paired an oversized sweatshirt dress with faux leather leggings and heels.  I added a blingy necklace to dress the look up a bit.
Pants:  Who What Wear for Target (No longer available online)
Glasses:  Valentino
Heels:  Target
Since my husband was cooking the second meal at our house, I got even more comfortable and lost the heels and pants.
Clutch:  The Limited
The holidays are always casual affairs in my family, and this year, I really just wanted to be comfortable.

This dress was perfect for the occasion!
Do you dress up for the holidays or go casual?
